Well, Iโ€™m late this week.  And I know you were all waiting around to read this post thinking, โ€œNow what am I supposed to do with those four minutes?โ€  Rough, crazy week!  I will leave it at that.

Okay, so obviously, the holidays are going to look a bit different this year.  No matter which holidays, you celebrate, Hanukkah, Christmas and/or Kwanzaa, the reality is, it just wonโ€™t be the same in 2020!

Many may be thinking, โ€œWell, this is just going to suck!โ€  But it doesnโ€™t have to.  Different, isnโ€™t necessarily a bad thing.  The eggnog glass, depending on how you look at it, is either half full, or half empty.  (Or, whatever you choose to drink!)  At this point, I will be celebrating waking up and breathing!

While the number of folks at your table this year might be smaller in size, you can still find ways to have an enjoyable holiday. For those that have less folks at the table because they lost folks, my heart goes out to you and I am deeply sorry for your loss.

For folks that have scaled back the festivities to protect themselves and others from illness, it is right decision. For those that are still planning a gathering with family and friends from outside of their immediate household, I just hope that you will take the necessary precautions and follow the suggested guidelines.  (Which you really arenโ€™t since the suggestion is NOT TO!)

If possible, you or your guests should get tested within two or three days of the gathering.  If you have insurance, Pixel Labs will send you a test to self-administer at no cost to you.  https://www.pixel.labcorp.com/covid-19. You will receive it within a day of ordering.  You can swab and return it in a prepaid Fedex and have your results within 48 hours.  Then, the key is to stay safe until the gathering.  Once you test, you really need to quarantine. If you can avoid public transportation, do so!

I know that for me and mine, we will be following the advice of the scientists (Yes Retrumpians, SCIENTISTS!) and keeping our holiday celebrations within our immediate family!

Many families will be celebrating this holiday season individually or virtually.  Some, (possibly many) will find themselves alone.  Alone can be difficult any time of the year, but particularly hard during the holidays.

That being said, one thing that I have learned in all these years is that more isnโ€™t always better.  Sometimes, itโ€™s just more.  Look at that half full glass of Nog!  (Just get more.  Youโ€™re not driving! Insert big-eyed emoji hereโ€ฆ) A small intimate dinner and some good old-fashioned bonding might be just what we need.

Perhaps make meal preparation a family event instead of slaving away alone in the kitchen! Maybe itโ€™s time that the lazy teenager upstairs playing video games learned how to roast some Brussels sprouts!  You know what would be really fun?  Film the meal prep.  (Just ask the kids.  They know how to do all that!) Create your own holiday cooking show! Who knows?  Netflix might buy it.  They apparently buy anything and everything! (Seriously!) Worst case, scenario is that it will provide years of laughter at how bad it was.

If you are alone, make yourself a fabulous dinner anyway.  Cooking not your thing?  Cheat.  Buy it.  No oneโ€™s judging.  But, even if you donโ€™t really cook, perhaps itโ€™s a good day to start.  It really can be a satisfying activity.  You might enjoy it!  No?  Okay, I tried.

Give yourself some gifts! Spend the day pampering your self!  Buy yourself some warm and snuggly pajamas or loungewear.  Take a long hot bath and then spend the day lounging!  Play some holiday music. Wait until Christmas Eve to decorate your tree. (Charlie Brown or otherwise)

My all time favorite holiday fun is binge-watching all of the best holiday movies and Christmas classics.  Come on now!  How can you feel bad after watching the abominable snowman change his ways or Yukon Cornelius come back from the dead? Bumbles bounce! And the misfit toys getting rescued!  Come on now! If you are not familiar with the Burgermeister Meisterburger, Heat Miser and Snow Miser, you havenโ€™t lived!

You cannot watch those shows and not feel better about the world!  (Yes, even in 2020! Okay, at least itโ€™s a fun distraction.) This is something you can do alone or with the family!  Holiday movie marathon!

Alone and adult?  Check out three of my favorite holiday flicks. Love Actually, The Family Stone and The Holiday!  Great holiday films! Just not really for kids. (Looking at the young Jude Law in the Holiday should take your mind off things! On 2nd thoughtโ€ฆโ€ฆ.) Hey, youโ€™re alone.  No oneโ€™s watching.  Yup!  Whatever it is you assume that Iโ€™m suggesting, Iโ€™m probably suggesting.  That will be a great conversation when someone asks you what you did for the holiday!

Just because you canโ€™t be physically together (Different topic now. Keep up!) doesnโ€™t mean you canโ€™t see your friends and family! You can always make a virtual dinner date or host an online party. Itโ€™s not the same, but at least when someone gets on your nerves you can claim the Wi-Fi went out!

I think they need more lights!

Another fun thing to do is a holiday lights tour.  My friend and I used to ride around and check out peopleโ€™s Christmas lights.  Some were beautiful!  Some were downright hilarious and gaudy as hell, but it was always entertaining.  My fav was the one that had the Rudolph and Santa right next to baby Jesus.  How is baby Jesus supposed to sleep with Rudolphโ€™s nose flashing?  It gets better!  Star Wars was involved! Disney characters on the back of the Three Wisemanโ€™s camels.  I had never seen such an insane holiday display.  We were dying laughing.

Christmas 2020 is definitely going to be one holiday that we will probably never forget.  Soโ€ฆ.get creative.  Get your craft on and make an ornament to commemorate 2020!  Go online for inspiration then hit Micheals or Amazon for materials so you have a selection to choose from for your 2020 creation! It can be outrageous or sentimental.

Messages from Christmas 2020!

Now, what to eat?  If you happen to have a family, but want to downscale, not only the amount of food but the amount of preparation as well, I have some suggestions for you!  Some of them will make your meal prep easier, while others will make your meal healthier!  (You knew that was coming!)

I havenโ€™t done a traditional holiday meal in forever.  I cannot tell you the last time I cooked a turkey!  Last year, I did an Italian inspired buffet and the year before, I went straight NOLA with Jambalaya and Gumbo!  This year, Iโ€™m thinking about going Seafood Fest! Put that broiler to work! Steamed crab legs, crab cakes, Lobster Tails, and oysters. Looking at the brighter side! This is a lot more economical when you have a small group!

Of course Plan B is to support a restaurant I love and order my dinner! (Plan B is also sounding really good after a few fifteen-hour days!)

Whether you choose to stay close to the traditional holiday dinner (scaling back or down) or switch it up a bit, here are some suggestions:

Letโ€™s start with skipping the turkey and ham.  You want pork? Try stuffing a pork loin with a boatload of garlic and a paste made from olive oil and chopped herbs like sage, and rosemary.  (I love garlic.  Canโ€™t you tell?)

I am so in love with Spatchcocked (split w/backbone removed.  Theyโ€™re easy to find now in markets.  Trader Joes and Wholefoods should have them.) Chicken roasted in a cast iron skillet!  Recently, I put one in a container, drowned it in garlic cloves, (I shoved some cloves under the skin too!) kosher salt, pepper, a little lemon juice, few sprigs of rosemary and buttermilk for a day.  The next day, I rinsed it off and dried the skin with some paper towels. I salted it, stuck it back in the fridge on a rack to let the skin dry out a bit.  (The dryer the skin, the crispier it will be!) After letting it sit out in room temp for a while, I browned that baby skin-side down in a little oil with a 2nd cast iron skillet on it to weigh it down flat. (You can actually use a clean brick wrapped in foil) I flipped it over and roasted it in the oven until cooked through, which is a lot less time consuming.  It was THEE best chicken I have ever made.  The skin was crispy and the meat flavorful and moist!  Who needs a turkey and some white-floured up gravy?  Not I!  Nor will you.  Try it.

If you still want turkey, try a bone in turkey breast. Allow 1lb per person.  It will cook a hell of a lot faster and you wonโ€™t have a fridge full of leftovers.  If you like dark meat, go for legs. Try the one sheet pan prep.  Roast the turkey along with some flavorful root vegetables. (Winter squash, sweet potatoes, parsnips along with some red onion chunks, sage or rosemary, garlic, salt and pepper!)  How about a butternut squash hash or some kicked up antioxidant rich cranberry sauce? (Sooooo good made fresh and easier than you might think!)

Braised carrots are not only great for you, but theyโ€™re easy to prepare!  Skip the mashed potatoes and just go for smashed! Better yet, substitute with sweets!  White potatoes are just no match for the nutrient packed sweets. Just donโ€™t ruin them smothering them in syrup, sugar, more sugar and marshmallows! There are so many varieties and until recently, I hadnโ€™t realized how different they all taste.  The Japanese sweet potatoes are sweet all by themselves.  Try roasting sweets with pear and sweet onions.

Hearty Stew!

You know what else is easy and yummy and can be just as satisfying?  A nice hearty winter stew! Yum! Whole roasted cauliflower!  Or mashed cauliflower.  That said; if you really need the comfort of a mashed potato, go for it.  All bets are off this year.  Everyone gets a pass.

Actually, I feel bad!  My intention was to develop and present a few recipes and some inspiration of my own. Sadly, I just couldnโ€™t find the time.  We are currently in production (my day job) and back to the fifteen-hour days for another week this year.

Like most, this has just been a crazy year for me and mine.  I set some pretty ambitious goals.  Starting this blog, a newsletter, planning a podcast and writing a new production.  Typically, I would beat myself up for not checking everything off my to do / to be list, but I decided to do something that for years I have always been unable to do.  โ€œGive myself a break and an A for effort!โ€  Thatโ€™s my holiday gift to me! A BREAK!

I have a much-needed vacation coming up over the holidays.  And it is going to be different this year for me as well.  Because this year it is highly likely that I am going to enjoy doing ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!  Other than rewriting a script, writing my long overdue newsletter and fighting with the NJ DMV so I can finally drive my car that has been parked and covered for almost six months!

Whatโ€™s your plan?  I would love to hear about it.  Perhaps you have some suggestions to share!

I know.  You must be thinking, โ€œAs if 2020 didnโ€™t suck enough, here she comes with this BS attempt to ruin our Christmas! I would never!  I am definitely not trying to be the Grinch that Stole Christmas! (For those that celebrate!) This post may also be a little late.  But, better late than never!

If you have been reading my blog, you know my intentions are always good.  My purpose is, and will always be to share healthful and helpful information.  First, I explain the issues that I have discovered and researched and then I try to offer suggestions and solutions to address those issues.

So, in case you havenโ€™t guessed, this post is about avoiding a toxic holiday!  (And no, Iโ€™m not referring to dysfunctional families or a crazy drunk uncle!)  If you are following the suggestions of the CDC, crazy drunk uncle needs to stay his ass at home this year!

The toxic holiday issues Iโ€™m referring to involve trees, wreaths, lights, candles and ornaments.  I know!  It never ends.

I think itโ€™s pretty safe to say that most of us that celebrate Christmas, love the scents associated with the holiday.  We love the smell of the Christmas trees. (Unless of course you grew up with one of those metallic blue or white trees!)

In an earlier post, (probably several) I talked about toxic chemicals found in home fragrances, scented candles and room sprays. Ahhhhh! We love that scent of pine.  Unfortunately, it comes in many forms and most of them are toxic! If you want the smell of pine, then my suggestion is to get a real tree and leave the artificial tree in the box.  But, not just any treeโ€ฆ..

For many years I had two trees. I had one artificial tree and one real tree.  Then I bought a giant house that needed a giant tree and found this ginormous artificial tree. It was beautiful. It was so life-like that my holiday guests would constantly touch it because they couldnโ€™t tell the difference. (And now that I think about it, why were you touching the tree? Did I ever come in your house and stroke your tree branches?  I would have to say no. But anywayโ€ฆ.) It was large and easy to assemble, although I spent hours shaping it to perfection. Yes, reusable artificial trees save us money, but they do come with a heavy price tag. Most of them are full of toxic chemicals. Many contain lead.

So whatโ€™s the alternative? Get yourself a real tree! Surely thatโ€™s a better option. But is it? Not so fast. Conventionally grown trees are often sprayed with pesticides. Of course you can look for an organic tree farm.  Consider this! Maybe you might want to purchase a live tree in a pot that you can later plant! (Sure, chop that sucker down in a few years if you like. Just an idea.)

Okay, so now itโ€™s time to decorate the tree.  Hereโ€™s the bad news.  You know those strings of lights you just spent all afternoon untangling and cursing at? Most of the cords are made with chemicals and lead as well. Best bet? LED lights!

Okay, letโ€™s create some holiday atmosphere and decorate the rest of the house, shall we?

What about candles? Sure. Just avoid those artificial and synthetic fragrances! Avoid toxins by burning candles made from beeswax or soy.  How about a homemade candle scented with the essential oils of cinnamon and clove? Yum.

Have a mantle or door begging for holiday cheer?  Try some garland made from natural greenery.  I loved the Pine Rope.  You can get that pine smell and it looks beautiful. But again, go organic whenever possible. Artificial wreaths and garland often contain PHTHALATES.  Remember those from my last post?  (Theyโ€™re hormone disruptors!) Most of you reading this probably already have disrupted hormones!

Are you into that spray-on snow stuff?  If so, just be careful.  Those sprays contain solvents that can be harmful when inhaled. (Maybe leave that covid mask on, or even better, do that spraying outdoors! Or not at all.) Once itโ€™s dried, itโ€™s typically not that harmful.

Still hanging Great Grandmaโ€™s hand-me-down ornaments?  They may have sentimental meaning, but those vintage ornaments often contain lead paint and mercury.  (Of course, some of the newer ones contain toxic paints.) Try handling with gloves on at least wash your hands after handling them.

Think about making your own ornaments from natural or up-cycled materials. I loved using ribbons with the wires in them that I could shape.  I also really love plain glass ornaments that reflect the lights. And yes, I’m a one-color-light kinda girl! Pick a color! Any color, but pick one! And OMG please do not have two different whites! (I’m pretty sure that’s illegal in some states!)

Okay. Back to ornament ideas. Try making some of your own ornaments. Remember Paper-mรขchรฉ?  That might be fun. Dress up some pinecones with ribbons. Recycle some of last yearโ€˜s Christmas cards to make a really cool garland or some ornaments.

What about the table? Perhaps a simple greens and pinecone centerpiece might be lovely. You know all that wine youโ€™ve been drinking?  Maybe you could use those wine bottles as candleholders! Soak the label off (Or not) and wrap a bow or some ribbon around it.   Just keep that ribbon or bow away from the flame!

A friend of mine made the most beautiful holiday centerpiece one year.ย  Unfortunately, it went up in flames during dessert! It was tragically hilarious.ย  You really had to be there to appreciate it.ย

Oh and skip the mistletoe and holly or leave it outside. Especially if you have kids or grandkids as they can cause illness in children if they eat those cute little berries. (And don’t little kids put everything in their mouths?) If you want to be kissed, just ask. (You know you need permission for everything now!)

Lastly, one final idea. If you would like the smell of Christmas without the toxic chemicals, try a stovetop potpourri!  Simmer some pine needles with some cloves and some other spices of your choosing.  Cinnamon might me nice.

Many of us will not be spending this holiday with family and friends, but by staying put and staying safe, we are giving others and ourselves the most precious gift of all!  Health!!!!

I invite you to share your ideas on how to have a happy and healthy holiday! Have a happy and SAFE holiday season.

I struggled with the title for this post. I wanted to talk about the how hand sanitizer does a job on our hands. I wanted to be cute with it and come up with a catchy title, but my first idea, “Hand Job,” didn’t seem right! But it would have gotten your attention!

Okay back to the matter at hand! (Pun totally intended!)  I have had old hands for thirty years.  I just could not stand wearing gloves.  When I cleaned, I needed to feel the clean.  And because I was always cooking, (and washing dishes) I always had my hands in water.  You donโ€™t wash and cut fresh produce wearing gloves.

I remember this old lady that lived above me when I had an apartment in Philly in the 80โ€™s yelling out her window when I was washing the car in the driveway, โ€œYou better put some gloves on young lady, unless you want to have old hands before your time.โ€  I didnโ€™t listen and she was right.  Older women usually are.

As a result of my bad habits, I already had dry, old-looking hands, but these Covid 19 hands are next level!  Of course, I will take the Covid hands over the virus all day!  In fact, it feels strange complaining about my hands when folks are losing their lives. There just are no words.

But the truth is, hand sanitizers can be both good and bad, depending on how you use them and which ones you use!  As with everything in this world, all things are NOT created equal. Hand sanitizers can also produce side effects that can be more than skin deep.

Dr. Chris Norris, a chartered physiotherapist and neurologist and Clinical Associate Professor at UC warns of some hand sanitizers that contain an antibiotic compound called triclosan or triclocarban.  A few research studies have reported that triclosan, overused, can become a health hazard. According to the FDA, it can have negative effects on fertility, reproduction, fetal development, and rates of asthma.”  It can also cause hormonal issues. (As if any of us need that!) For more detail, check out the links at the end of this post.

Hand sanitizers loaded with fragrance can also be loaded with toxic chemicals, including parabens and phthalates which are known endocrine disruptors. I talked about these toxins in the post at the end.

If you have the option to wash your hands thoroughly, by all means do that and pass on the hand sanitizer.  If you wash your hands properly, you do not need to do both. For months I was working at home (Since Feb actually) and was pretty much isolated.  It was only recently that I had to leave home for work and work with others.  Needless to say, I was drowning my hands in sanitizer all day.

Prior to this, I only used it when I was out of the house for errands, which most days was zero! My job requires me to be on location one week out of the month now, which was last week and being outdoors most of the time, washing hands wasnโ€™t an option.  My clip-on sanitizer was my only line of defense! As a result, by the end of the week, my hands felt like sandpaper.  I could have exfoliated my entire body with my bare hands!  They were dry as hell and hereโ€™s why thatโ€™s bad!

Dry, cracked skin makes it easier for germs and bacteria to enter your body!

Dr. Scott Worswick, Clinical associate Professor of Dermatology at USC Keck School of Medicine states, โ€œIf you have microbreaks in our skin because your skin is dry, and you are not moisturized enough, we know that that increases your chances of getting bacterial infections.โ€

โ€œIt’s important to not overdo the sanitizer and to moisturize after every use,” advises dermatologist Peterson Pierre, M.D., of the Pierre Skin Care Institute.

โ€œIndividuals should rub their hands together for about 15-30 seconds covering all surfaces with hand sanitizer until the hands are dry, and then apply a moisturizer,” says Dr. Nelson. Caroline Nelson, M.D., dermatologist and instructor at Yale School of Medicine. (Especially fingertips which are prone to cracking!)

Lastly, in terms of moisturizers or lotions, go with sample size tubes or squeeze bottles to avoid contamination of the contents.

Now, hereโ€™s what Iโ€™ve been doing to repair my brillo-pad hands at night and in the AM before I start my day.

My sister made me these lotion cubes.  Iโ€™m totally hijacking them and rebranding them โ€œMy Black is Not Cracking???? (Come on yaโ€™ll come up with a name for them?  It is an official name those cubes competition, with absolutely no prize!) I know, total copyright infringement, but they work.  I simply hold one in my clean, freshly washed or showered, (patted dry) hands until they softened a bit (seconds) and then go to town.  (And for my Sisters of Melanin, works wonders for ashy ankles and elbows too!)

Hereโ€™s the recipe created by Debbie Vaughn herself (aka The Gooch) for MBIC.

My Black is Not Cracking Lotion Bars (They also work as a lip balm if you are fortunate enough to have lips.)

This recipe was created to soothe hands suffering from repeated exposure to hand sanitizers, but can be used on any area of the body in need of moisturizing TLC. Try it as an overnight treatment with some cotton gloves (or socks on rough feet).

Yield: 1 cup

This recipe produced 18 mini cubes and 5 lip balm tubes.

In a glass measuring cup, melt the solid oils in 30 second intervals in microwave (or saucepan on low heat)

Solids:

2/3 c organic coconut oil

1 Tbs organic shea butter

1 Tbs organic cocoa butter

1.5 Tbs beeswax

Add in:

1/4 tsp vitamin E

1/4 tsp pomace oil (or extra virgin olive oil)

1/4 tsp avocado oil

8 drops hemp oil

1/2 tsp aloe butter (see link below)

1/2 tsp jojoba

9 drops helichrysum essential oil

10 drops rose hip seed oil

https://www.herzindagi.com/beauty/make-aloe-vera-butter-at-home-use-for-beautiful-skin-hair-article-130982

You can find all of these ingredients in Wholefoods, on Amazon, or maybe Sprouts.

You can add a few drops of favorite fragrance or essential oil, if desired.

Pour liquid into a silicone container and chill until solid. Store in a cool place.

About the Ingredients:

Shea Butter had high concentrations of fatty acids and vitamins. It also has anti-inflammatory and healing properties. Shea butter helps to condition, tone and soothe the skin.

Cocoa Butter is mostly made up of fatty acids. These fats may help form a protective layer on the skin, preventing moisture from escaping, and therefore stopping the skin from drying out.

Coconut Oil contains nourishing fatty acids that help hydrate and protect. These include linoleic acid (vitamin F), which helps skin retain moisture, and lauric acid, which has antibacterial properties.

Pomace oil is the juice extracted from the fruit of the olive tree. Pomace olive oil is refined olive oil and has no flavor. It can be used to rejuvenate dry skin, and also can be used in the bath and on the scalp.

Hemp Seed Oil is an excellent skin moisturizer as it is easily absorbed by the skin and contributes significantly to the skinโ€™s barrier function to prevent moisture loss. Hemp oil is a perfect skin food because it is rich in nutrients, essential fatty acids, and antioxidants making it an ideal carrier oil for massage and healing treatments. After using it for some time, the skinโ€™s appearance can improve significantly.

Jojoba Oil is good for sensitive skin. It keeps the skin moist while offering healing and anti-inflammatory elements.

Helichrysum Essential Oil

A benefit of Helichrysum Oil is that it is Anti-inflammatory and Antimicrobial Skin Helper and may help wounds heal faster.

Aloe Butter – aids in rapid hydration of dry skin

Avocado Oil contains a high percentage of Vitamin E, as well as potassium, lecithin, and many other nutrients which can nourish and moisturize skin. The oleic acid also promotes collagen production, which helps grow new skin. This accelerates the healing process, helping with issues like sunburn.

Rose Hip Seed Oil is rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, which are integral for tissue and cell regeneration in the skin.

Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that may be effective at reducing UV damage in skin. Applied topically, Vitamin E may help nourish and protect skin from damage caused by free radicals.

Beeswax creates a protective layer on the skin. It’s also a humectant, which means that it attracts water and helps the skin stay hydrated. Beeswax also a natural exfoliator, ideal for sloughing away dead skin cells.

For more info on the toxins that may be hiding in your sanitizer, please check out the post below. And as always, if you have a solution or a hand routine that you’ve had success with, please share! (You know I wanted to say hand job again, don’t cha!)

And no, they are not new Disney characters!

Recently, one of my subscribers (and old friendโ€ฆnot old, old, but old as in been around a long damn time!) mentioned that in middle age, she was suddenly suffering from eczema and if I recall correctly, either an increased issue with asthma or newly developed asthma.  I had already been researching causes and potential cures or at least how to improve issues with eczema, so it was timely that she would mention this issue.

As a child I sufferered terribly from eczema.  I know this is gross, but I would scratch until I bled!  I was always walking around with bandaids on my the inside of my elbows and the back of my knees.  I was fortunate that my outbreaks were only in those two places, but it was still torture.

As I got older, and coincidently, as I improved my diet and developed heathier habits, not only did my eczema go away, my hay fever disappeared as well!  Later in life I would have outbreaks of eczema, but after some research, I believe I might have solved the mystery as to why. (At least in part.)

Itโ€™s been a while since I have had any issues, so I originally started researching eczema for my granddaughter who also suffers from it.  I noticed that she had recently developed a patch on her cheek.  Unlike myself, she has it in multiple areas and I wanted to figure out how to help her.  I remember the torture.  Itโ€™s miserable to itch all the damn time!  I am a big believer in the idea that you can reverse almost any issue.  Worst case, improve it.  While her eczema is not age related, I do believe that it is related to her immune system and diet!

Afte the recent comment from my reader, I revisited my research and hereโ€™s what I learned!

We all know by now that with age things tend to deteriorate.  Obviously, there are many things we can do to slow the process, but itโ€™s pretty much inevitable that things will start to malfunction or slow down.  One of them is our immune systems, which is why is so important to take such good care of it and develop habits that strengthen the immune system, rather than harm it! (Like unnecessary and excessive antibiotic use and poor dietary and lifestyle habits.)

Studies have shown that the hormone estrogen has a significant effect on the immune system.  Hormones as you know (or maybe do not know) are chemical messengers secreted by the glands of the endocrine system of our body.  They are released directly into our bloodstream and tell our muscles and organs to perform certain functions. Hormones are essential for the proper functioning of our body.  For a number of reasons, they can get out of balance and when that happens it can often lead to some pretty serious health issues.

Apart from the endocrine system, our body also has a unique self-defense system to prevent and guard our organs against invasions of germs, viruses, pathogens, and other foreign elements from the outside world like dust or pollens. Just like the endocrine glands, our immune system also releases some hormone-like chemicals to fight against these invaders. One of these chemicals is Histamine. Histamine does have some important functions, but like everything else, too much of it can be a problem. (Too much of most things can cause problems!) It becomes a problem when there is more in the body than can be broken down.  Histamine triggers inflammation at the site of invasion to prevent the further spread of pathogens, which causes us to sneeze, tear up, or itch. Other symptoms might include hives (which I got regularly in my early thirties before enlightenment!) Post nasal drip, nasal congestion, and even headache can be a result of histamine issues.

Our endocrine and immune systems are meant to work in coordination, and their functions go hand in hand. But in some individuals, an imbalance in the endocrine system can trigger a false response from the immune system. The immune system overreacts by prompting unnecessary inflammatory responses that may make things worse for the body. One such discomfort is allergy. Allergies are nothing but an over-exaggerated and unnecessary immune response to some harmless foreign elements. There are many kinds of allergies โ€“ eczema and asthma are two of them.

Research shows that those who have eczema (or atopic dermatitis) are three times more prone to develop asthma in the next 5-10 years. This correlation between asthma and eczema can be explained by the fact that both allergies are caused by excess histamine secretion by our immune system. Histamines cause inflammation in the skin that leads to itching and blocks air passages in the lungs, causing breathing discomforts.

Menopause can worsen the condition

As if eczema and asthma arenโ€™t scary and torturous enough, menopause can actually worsen both. During menopause and premenopause, our body goes through various changes including the aforementioned fluctuating hormones, falling estrogen levels, stress, fatigue, mood changes, sleep problems, and digestive issues. Issues like stress, a faulty digestive system and lack of sleep all have a serious impact on our immune system.  As a result our bodies may react differently to previously harmless allergens by producing more histamines to defend the body. Unfortunately, many women develop these allergies during this menopausal or premenopausal period.  Those with allergies may experience a worsening of their conditions.

So what can you do!  For one, consume a diet that supports your immune function.  In the mean time, here are some ways to naturally get some relief from the symptoms:

Aloe vera has been used in traditional and folk medicines to help with many skin-related ailments. Research has shown that aloe vera (all parts of the plant) possesses potent antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that may explain its wound healing and immune-boosting activities. It is known to prevent infections, soothe inflammation, and promote healing of irritable skin conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, scars, and boils. Aloe vera also works as a wonderful moisturizer that can help soothe eczema.

Aloe vera gel and aloe-based products are readily available, however, choose carefully! Some store-bought gels may contain artificial colors, perfumes, or other chemical preservatives that can worsen your condition. I suggest buying an aloe vera plant.  You can extract the gel from its leaves, and apply it directly to the affected areas.

Bathing!  Eczema sufferers need extra moisture for their skin. Bathing can help with these conditions by balancing the pH of the skin and by keeping the moisture intact. However, a proper way of bathing is more important because using soap and water often can make your skin even drier and worsen eczema.

Do

Bath at least once a day.

Use lukewarm water.

Adjust your bath time to 5-10 minutes.

Choose your soap carefully.  Soaps with high pH value can disturb the natural acidic medium of skin and damage it even further.

After the bath, use a deep moisturizer that can penetrate the skin barrier and also work as a sealant. Cocoa butter or shea butter can do the trick.

Add apple cider vinegar to lukewarm water and soak for about 15-20 minutes. A National Eczema Association (NEA) report suggests that apple cider vinegar may help with eczema conditions. People with eczema have elevated pH skin. This can compromise their defense systems and trigger skin allergies like itching. ACV is mildly acidic (low in pH) that can help balance the skin pH levels. However, always use vinegar in diluted form, as its acidic nature may damage soft tissues.

Don’t

Don’t use the water too hot or too cold, as it may irritate the skin even further and make it drier.

Avoid harsh soaps. You can also make your own DIY soaps with natural saponins and herbs.

Avoid rubbing vigorously.

Here are some other things to try!

Oatmeal is not just for cookies! A 2015 study suggests that colloidal oatmeal possesses significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which can prevent itching due to inflammation on the skin.  It can help reduce dryness and roughness. Add powdered colloidal oatmeal to lukewarm water and soak. Avoid this treatment if you are allergic to oats. As with everything, read the label! Check for added preservatives that may worsen your condition.

Tea tree oil and Neem oil are both well known for their extensive use in traditional medicines. Due to their extremely strong anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and wound healing actions, these wondrous oils can help with almost any kind of skin disorder. Neem is widely used in India as an additive to soaps, shampoos, cleansers, lotions, creams, and other skincare products. Neem oil contains antihistamine flavonoids that reduce skin dryness and itching, prevent inflammation, and reduce allergies. Before using tea tree oil on the skin, always remember to dilute it with a carrier oil first.

Moisturizing the skin plays a key role in eczema prevention. Choose the right oils and body-butters that can provide adequate moisture and also help in preventing its loss.

Coconut oil contains some healthy fatty acids that can penetrate into deeper layers of the skin and prevent dryness. It is clinically proven to soothe inflammation of the skin, which may help with eczema. (an inflammatory disorder.)

Honey is an age-old remedy for soothing skin conditions, healing wounds, and boosting immunity. Its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties and emollient nature can help keep the skin moisturized, reduce itching, and help with allergic conditions. (Test first on a small area and do not use if you are allergic!)

Olive oil naturally contains high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 has anti-inflammatory properties and is also a heavy-duty sealant for locking in the moisture. Applying warm olive oil to the affected area before bedtime can greatly reduce itching and ease eczema symptoms.

Make dietary adjustments! (My issues improved greatly when I cut wayyyyy back on sugar!) Since eczema is basically an inflammation of the skin that is caused by excess production of histamine chemicals, foods with antihistamine flavonoids and anti-inflammatory properties can help address the underlying root cause. Consume lots of green vegetables, turmeric, cinnamon, fatty fish, olives, bell peppers, broccoli and cauliflower.  Consume sources of vitamin C and omega-3 to naturally reduce inflammation in the body. Vitamin C is a great immune-booster and acts as a natural antihistamine so enjoy foods high in vitamin C.  I also take a 1000 mg supplement daily.

Avoid eating inflammatory foods like dairy and wheat. Get your gut in check! (most of your immune system lives there!) A strong gut lining and diverse gut microbiome are essential for a healthy immune response.

Some foods are higher in naturally occurring histimaines.  Try eliminating those and perhaps you will see improvement! Most of them you should be avoiding anyway! Those include: Cured meats, shellfish and canned products.  As always, it is best to eat fresh fruits and vegetables. (Avoiding some veggies higher in histamine)

Lastly, a study published by the National Institute of Health (link below) suggests that methods of preparation can also affect the histamine levels in foods.  Grilling and frying for instance, increased levels where boiling resulted in a reduction of histamine levels.

While I have been fortunate to be symptom free fro some time now, I do have friends that are suffering.  I hope that you will find this information helpful.

If any of you have found relief from eczema in some way not mentioned in this post, we would love to hear from you.

I know many of us women have for years been robbed of our precious sleep due to hormones.  I donโ€™t know about you, but for me, it started with night sweats.  I was in my thirties and waking up several times a night drenched.  I couldnโ€™t wake the spouse up and change the sheets, so I would get up, dry off, change clothes and return with towels.  (Sometimes twice a night!) Two towels to lie on and two to separate myself from the wet sheet!  I had no idea what was going on! (Meanwhile he slept soundly and missed all the fun!)  Want to know why one of us woke up smiling and one of us woke up grouchy?  BECAUSE ONLY ONE OF US SLEPT!

Truth told, I battled periods of insomnia all of my life.  But, in retrospect and with the knowledge I have now, I realize most of those issues were due to some really bad habits on my part.  I may have been able to improve my hormone function, but I could have definitely improved my sleep habits!

The serial entrepreneur I am, I used to get in bed with business books that would just get my brain going.  I would be all wired up and excited about some new idea, concept or business venture.

Or I would eat too late or eat the wrong things and be amped up on caffeine or carbs and sugar. (My pre-fully enlightened years! What? That plate of warm toll house cookies in bed was a bad idea?)

I later discovered exercising at night was an issue for me, because after a work out, I would be energized.  (Actually, the best time to have sex!  If you like anyone that much and have someone to have sex with! Oh, and maybe after a shower!  Or not!  No judgment!) No, thatโ€™s like some scientific S#*T! I did not make that up.

Okay, back to my issues.  Mostly my issues were my inability to quiet my thoughts and get my brain to shut up so I could fall asleep. I would be lying there sometimes re-playing all the things I didnโ€™t accomplish that day and all the things I needed to do tomorrow.

Next thing I know Iโ€™m scanning the thoughts of everything I did wrong my entire life and having anxious thoughts about the future. No sooner than I chased one thought away there were three more waiting. It was like being on a rollercoaster that wouldnโ€™t stop. Next thing you know, Iโ€™m anxious about being anxious! Part hormones.  Part insanity.

I would also watch TV in bed.  Later it would be laptops and cell phones.  I was chronically exhausted and as someone that is incapable of taking naps (unless Iโ€™m sick, on a beach or on vacation and happy hour started at noon!) it was an unhealthy existence.  No matter how tired I was, my brain just had way too much energy. (Until about 2pm the next day when I needed it to work and it would be crashing on me!)

Eventually, as I changed my habits, things improved! And then came menopause.  Lucky for me, it coincided with sleeping alone.  I could open the window in the dead of winter and turn the AC to frigid during the summer and then strategically place the fan to blow the arctic air directly at my head!

So, just as it seemed I had my hot flashes and night sweats under control, a new phenomenon developed.  I had recently started drinking Starbucks Coffee.  I was never a real fan, it just happened to be the closest cup of coffee and I would go there in the morning before work to write.  Around that same time, I started feeling this gurgling sensation when I would lie down at night.  I slept on my back a lot. (I think it was around the time I read that it was better for your aging face!) I had no idea what was causing this gurgling, but I think I believed I had developed acid reflux.  I blamed Starbucks.  (I mean it is some strong ass coffee!) I would some times wake up choking and coughing.  A little birdie eventually said to me, โ€œYou were snoring last night! You must have been really tired.  Never heard you do that before!โ€  I laughed that off and thought, โ€œNO WAY!โ€ (Wasnโ€™t really a bird.)

Okay, so he lied about a lot of things, but that wasnโ€™t one of them.  Turns out, during this โ€œStageโ€ of life many women experience these same issues! In addition to the hot flashes and night sweats, many middle-aged women develop sleep apnea!  The fun just never ends. So, my face sliding down my neck and the trail of dust that was my vagina wasn’t bad enough? Guess not.

Okay, so back to sleeping.  Iโ€™m sure you have all heard about Melatonin.  You mention not sleeping and someone suggests you try it.  I think I did at one point, but I really didnโ€™t know what it was.

Melatonin is actually a hormone produced in your brain by the Pineal Gland.  It plays a part in the regulation of the circadian rhythm.  (The 24 hour period involving sleep and being awake. Itโ€™s a different rhythm of the night.  One without El Debarge!) Yes, Iโ€™m dating myself, but my whole blog dates myself! Anyway, after menopause, our melatonin levels decline making it more difficult to sleep.  According the Roxy Dillon in her book, Bio Young, the Melatonin supplement sold in health food stores is actually a synthetic hormone concoction.  Neither Roxy or I are a fan of synthetic anything.  โ€œThe Pineal Gland can atrophy as a result of these synthetics,โ€ unlike using natural methods to raise your melatonin levels.  (So, you see in the long run, it might make things worse.)

For Roxyโ€™s suggestions on natural ways to raise levels, keep reading!

Iโ€™m telling you, we women canโ€™t catch a break.  Bob, I will take the balding head and the ED for $200! (Not really!)

I also started thinking, maybe we donโ€™t sleep because we see the clock ticking and we know we have limited time.  Maybe we donโ€™t want to waste too much of it sleeping.   Maybe we still have things we want to accomplish.  Or maybe we just want to finally slow down, relax and enjoy!  I know I want to enjoy as much of the day as possible?  Maybe we just donโ€™t require as much sleep?

WE NEED SLEEP!
brown hourglass on brown wooden table

Nope.  We need sleep.  A good seven or eight hours of it, and hereโ€™s a few reasons why!

A lack of sleep can affect your immune system. Studies show that people who don’t get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus!  (Can you say Rona?) AND, it can also affect how quickly you can recover from said virus!

While youโ€™re sleep, your immune system releases these proteins called cytokines. (Substances secreted by certain cells of the immune system that modulate the functions of other cells.  Itโ€™s a whole thing you can google, but they help signal the system that itโ€™s time to fight!) Sleep deprivation can decrease production of these protective cytokines.

Long-term sleep deprivation can increase your risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease. (Aha! Coincides with the high BP!) Itโ€™s all related!

Sleep is a vital. Sleep restores, repairs and reenergizes.

“We now understand that high-quality sleep is absolutely vital to good health,” says Dr. JoAnn E. Manson, the Michael and Lee Bell Professor of Women’s Health at Harvard Medical School.

According to Dr. Manson, in that same article, sleeping less than six hours also increases your risk of cognitive decline. โ€œWhen you’re asleep, a waste clearance system in the body known as the glymphatic system runs what is essentially a rinse cycle in the brain, using cerebrospinal fluid,โ€ (the clear fluid found in the brain and spine). She explains that this fluid flows more freely through the brain when it is at rest. (At night!) It washes away a harmful protein known as beta-amyloid. When this process doesn’t occur, scientists believe that the build up of beta-amyloid forms plaques that are characteristic of Alzheimer’s disease.

Studies also suggest that sleep problems may increase risk and contribute to the development of some psychiatric disorders.  There are multiple stages of sleep.  When you are in DEEP sleep, your body temperature drops, heart rate and breathing slows and your muscles relax.  These physiological changes actually help boost your immune function and again, we can all use the immune boost right now!

So, what can you do? Here are some things Iโ€™ve done and some suggestions from Roxyโ€™s book:

Natural Options to Raise Melatonin Levels:

Have a glass of pineapple juice or tart cherry juice daily, but she suggests to consume this no later than 4pm.  (Tart Cherry is a bonus if you have gout!)

Walnuts, according to Roxy, also raise melatonin levels.

6 Ways to Better Sleep:

Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.  Put yourself on a schedule and try to adhere to it.

Regular exercise, but in the AM or early afternoon.  When I exercised at night, I went in the wrong direction.

Create a sleep sanctuary!  Keep the room on the cooler side and as dark as possible.  I know we need night-lights to keep from busting our asses when we inevitably get up to pee nine times a night, but keep that light to a minimum.

Leave the laptop, if possible cell phone and anything else that emits that blue light, in the other room.  Try turning those things OFF at least an hour before you close your eyes.  Read a book instead. (Just not a business book!)

Try experimenting with some relaxation techniques such as meditation or deep breathing exercises.

If you are like me, you regularly have a glass of wine in the evening.  Donโ€™t overdo it!  And definitely, avoid anything with caffeine after lunch-time.  That wine might help you fall asleep but it can screw up the quality of your sleep. That sugar will probably wake you up a few hours later.

If you are suffering from lack of sleep, give these a try. And of course, if you have any other suggestions that have worked for you, feel free to share!

Good Night!

I started writing this post earlier this week and finished it Friday night.  Obviously, this was prior to the historic announcement that Biden would be our next president and that, Kamala Harris, a WOMAN and a woman of color, would be the next Vice President.  Was I surprised? No.  I believed that a huge segment of the population would show up and vote for Biden. If not vote for Biden, vote against another four years of Trump. (We only had two choices! And quite frankly, one option!) Real talk! He treated us like life was a game.  We were merely the pieces. A game he was willing to win at all costs. Including sacrificing the lives of our friends and family members, our jobs, our homes, our careers, and our sanity. Well do you still wanna play a game Don? Cool.  Letโ€™s play Monopoly. Go directly to jail. Do not pass go! Do not collect $200.

And P.S. Letitia James is waiting for you!  I wrote in the post below that I believed things would get better and that it might not be today, but it would get better.  NOPE!  I WAS WRONG.  IT GOT BETTER TODAY! (11/7/20)

I still believe this post is worth sharing and quite frankly, itโ€™s all I got for ya this week!  It was a long week and I, like most of you are drained and exhausted!!!!

20-fn-20

Am I the only person that has been angry and stressed out all year?  Yeah, I didnโ€™t think so!

It started with losing one of my jobs in January.ย  (Uh, the one that paid the most!)ย  Wait, no, it started with Kobe Bryantโ€™s death.ย  I have no idea why that hit me so hard, but it did.ย  I cried like a baby the day he died. Maybe it was that I was super tired from being on my 7th workday, but I was emotional. Like I knew this man! And, then, as a Mother, I cried some more after I learned his Daughter and other children had perished in the crash.ย  I was sad and angry.ย  A good man, father, and positive role model was gone! Meanwhileโ€ฆโ€ฆnever mind, letโ€™s just say I often feel the good die young and evil seems to live on forever.ย  I wonโ€™t name any names here because I donโ€™t want MIB at my door.ย  I know that sort of thinking doesnโ€™t serve me, but Iโ€™m just being honest.

Then I balled all the way through the Lakerโ€™s tribute and eventually the memorial.  I could only imagine what Vanessa Bryant was feeling.  My Daughter and my Grandkids are a huge part of the reason I do what I do every day.  The thought of losing any of them.  I cannot even begin to explain, but you would probably find me in a ball someplace.  My heart ached for her.

Like most of us, I have had some rough times, but the stress (resulting from a combination of anger and fear!) was at an all-time high!  I was frantically looking for a new gig.  I thought to myself, โ€œWhat the hell could be worse than January and February!โ€

And then March came, and I found out what could be worse!  March=People dying needlessly because of lack of information and bad information coming from whatโ€™s his face.  Being isolated and locked down alone. (Although in hindsight, that wasnโ€™t really all that bad!  Something to say for peace!)  Planning my toilet paper heists when I got down to that last few squares!  Staring at the blow dryer as a last resort!

person carrying tissue rolls

At the supermarket trying to get the inside scoop on the next toilet paper and paper towel delivery! (I was determined to get my own roll!!!)  Trying to make a pot of chili and searching store after store for a can of beans in a hazmat suit.  Looking around for Cuba Gooding and the โ€œOutbreak Monkey.โ€ Stripping at my front door every time I took a walk with my ration of Clorox Wipes slowly dwindling.  (I wasn’t sure Green Cleaner would kill Rona!) Worrying about my kids getting sick or when the money would run out since even though my income was cut by three quarters, I still couldnโ€™t qualify for unemployment!

Okay, so now Iโ€™m isolated alone with my thoughts and CNN.  Iโ€™m taking classes, writing, exercising, walking, reading, studying and now cooking meals three times a day, so Iโ€™m busy as hell!  I was productive!  I was preparing to launch my blog.  I was searching for a job.  I was taking classes to prepare myself for the job market which I hadnโ€™t really been in for a while.  For many years, my work was through referrals, friends, or I interviewed once and was hired immediately.  My resume was a good 15+ years old, and so were my skills!  (I was like WTH is a Google Doc?) So, my days were quite busy.  I was still working part time, but for the first time in a long time, I had the news on hours each day.  I was informed and stressed the hell out!

When I was working 60-70 hours a week, I cruised headlines and thatโ€™s about all I had time for.  I knew in 2016 we had problems, but until then, I was too busy to think about them.  I had two jobs, two households, self-care and family matters that filled my day 24/7/365! I got most of my news on Friday nights during my date with Bill Maher.  I learned years before to NEVER watch the news before bed.  There was never anything good to come of that.  I had a rule! End the night with something funny.  There were times I had to turn Bill off because the current events were so disturbing that I knew they would keep me up and stress me out even more.

Suddenly, in addition to my own personal concerns about money, health and family, I was worried about the world.  I had always been conscientious about climate change, recycling and trying to do better so I could preserve the earth for my grandkids, (and yours) but this was next level concern.  Now people Iโ€™ve known for many years are dying from Covid.  Text or call after call, came in about someone being hospitalized and dying. Others are sick at home.  My investments were crashing and burning.  WTH 2020!

Then Amy Cooper (a/k/a Karen 2.0) happened and shortly after that you got to watch a man plead for his life and call for his Momma, while some racist mf-r rested on his neck, murdering him on camera without a care in the world!  Then this clown in the white house with his daily antics.  As if he hadnโ€™t been annoying enough for three years prior, he was in overdrive!  Karens were everywhere.  They were just coming out of the woodwork like roaches.  It was like they were handing out permits to be outwardly racist at the DMV. (As if you can get anything out of the DMV!)

Okay, so Kobeโ€™s gone.  People I know are dropping dead and the rest, Iโ€™m worried sick about.  People I donโ€™t know (but are somebodyโ€™s children) are being murdered.  The planet is dying.  People are losing everything and Iโ€™m not really sure I wonโ€™t be making it onto that list.  Stressed AF.

Oh, I know.  Why not give my kid a debilitating illness, force me to move into a room, continue to pay for a car and insurance on a car I canโ€™t drive because the state of NJ is wack-ass and you pay through the teeth for the wack-assedness because not only are real estate taxes some of the highest in the country, the car insurance isnโ€™t far behind. (I sound angry, huh?) And Trumpโ€™s wonderful tax plan caps the write off on the really high real estate taxes! Nice.  I handled payroll for a company and almost EVERY employee suddenly owed taxes!  Meanwhile ole boy paid what, $750?

So, did I need the stress of the realization that approximately one half of the country hates me because of the color of my skin? Or that a huge segment of the population is stupid as hell.  (yeah Covid is a hoax and the entire world is in on it!  Yup, you figured it out, you geniuses!)

This was a year of firsts!  I applied for jobs and didnโ€™t even get a consideration.  They saw those eight pages of experience and figured, โ€œThis B is old as hell!  Sheโ€™s going to stay one year and retire.โ€  As if!

AND Iโ€™m sad to say, I learned what hate feels like.  Iโ€™ve never hated anyone in my life.  (Strong dislike maybe!  And not to whine, but Iโ€™ve had some folks be pretty shitty to me.)  Next level disrespect, and yet I have never harbored ill will toward them.  (I felt so much better after I put that laxative in the milk and then I was done being mad and moved on.  Donโ€™t ask.)

Yes, Iโ€™m working on it. I know enough to know that hate only hurts the person carrying it around!  I hate, hate! Iโ€™m not perfect.  I, like most of us are a work in progress.

Real talk, in 2020, Iโ€™ve not only been stressed. Iโ€™ve been angry and itโ€™s a wicked, unhealthy combination! We all know stress is a part of life.  Iโ€™ve worked really hard to find ways to relieve mine.  2020 has been rough for most of us, in particular those that lost loved ones and their livelihood.  Iโ€™m grateful and happy to say, Iโ€™m at least back to work (less money, but GRATEFUL TO HAVE A JOB!!!!) although members of my family are still unemployed or underemployed and have had their businesses seriously affected by this pandemic.  They too are stressed.  So, I feel that stress too.

If you have read my previous posts, you know I have written quite a bit about stress!  If you havenโ€™t here is a recap:

According to the  National Institute of Mental Health, stress is the way that the body and brain responds to a perceived demand or threat.   The stress response is a natural physiological reaction which can be brought on by a major life change or traumatic event. Or stress can be a result of a combination of smaller issues such as your normal day to day BS.

Stress is normal. (In small doses.)  Extreme or prolonged, and unrelenting stress can take a huge toll on both physical health and mental wellbeing. When stressed your brain sends signals to your adrenal glands to release more of the hormone cortisol and as result, increase your heart rate and blood pressure. And who needs that?  โ€œNot I,โ€ says the woman trying to eliminate her BP pills!  And if you read my previous post on stress, you  also know the damage cortisol can do to not only your waist-line, but your organs, your brain and immune function and we DEFINITELY donโ€™t need that in the middle of a pandemic! (Or any other time for that matter.)

“According to the  Mayo Clinic, ongoing chronic stress can cause or worsen a number of serious (and sometimes irreversible) health issues.” (I cut and pasted that and can’t find where from! Sorry) It can impact every aspect of our lives.  So, when combined with anger, youโ€™re walking around like a ticking time bomb! And no one needs to explode.  (Thatโ€™s a whole mess no one wants to clean up!)

Anger is also a natural, instinctive response to threats. Some anger is necessary for our survival. Anger only becomes an issue when your ass canโ€™t control it! But, anger, like stress (and many extreme emotions) also affects your organs, heart, brain and increases your BP and heart rate. Again, all bad! We all experience anger, BUT the frequency or severity of anger is what affects your mental health and well-being.  I was feeling angry far too often.

And, if I am being totally honest, I have to admit, in addition to anger and stress, there were moments of despair, brewing in the pot too. ย I had some moments of sadness and started to feel hopeless.ย  (Luckily, there were moments and not hours or days!) ย I seriously had moments where I thought, โ€œthis entire sitch is just HOPELESS”.ย  My grandkids are screwed!โ€ย

Surely, I am not alone in thinking that this country has just been out of FN control.  Seems like just yesterday that I ONLY had to worry about my kid and grandkid being stopped by police for driving while black.  Now I have to worry about them being stopped by racists assholes with big flags, bigger guns, half a brain (and that half is brain-washed) harassing them or worse!  I started to realize that half of the country must be either:

  • Racist
  • Stupid
  • Greedy (blinded by greed)
  • Indifferent (donโ€™t care about anyone or anything)
  • Blinded by other fears
  • Ignorant  and living in a bubble
  • All of the above

Iโ€™m sorry, but that is a scary ass realization!  I thought, okay, so now how the hell do we live with these folks? No oneโ€™s leaving.  Hell, no one would let us in if we wanted to.  I know values vary but agreeing that everyone should enjoy the same rights and freedoms shouldnโ€™t be an issue up for debate at this juncture.

I understand that we have to agree to disagree about things, but racism isnโ€™t one of them. I get that people are misinformed and fearful.  I get that theyโ€™ve been fed a load of crap and some coming from media, but most of it, social media, family and friends.  It can be a distorted reality.  But there is no mistaking what you know who has done.  You’ve seen it with your own two eyeballs!  Or heard with your own two ears.  You saw him making fun of the handicap.  There is no โ€œtaking that out of context!โ€ You hear him ADMIT to sexually assaulting women and grabbing them by the Pโ€™s! How is that okay?  Like ever! Youโ€™ve heard him say terrible things about non-whites.  Thereโ€™s no mistaking his failure to condemn white supremacist. No one is putting words in his mouth or misrepresenting here.

If you follow someone that commits a crime, you are as guilty as they are.  If you are with them when they commit a crime, you too can be sentenced.  Itโ€™s guilt by association.  You are judged by the company you keep!  So, choose carefully. Itโ€™s 20 FN 20! Racism isnโ€™t okay.  Sexism isnโ€™t okay.  Most โ€œismโ€™sโ€ arenโ€™t okay!

Racial injustice is real whether the powers that be, want to admit it or not.  He has been fanning the flames of racism on social media for the past four years. He may as well have run a campaign ad saying, โ€œIโ€™m racist AF. Racism is acceptable.  Iโ€™m Donald J Asshole and I approve this messageโ€

The good news is that itโ€™s out in the open now. (Doesnโ€™t exactly feel like good news.) Itโ€™s no longer hiding in plain sight.ย  Look, you canโ€™t fix a problem unless you know you have it!ย  That applies to any problem.ย  Systemic racism has deep roots. Itโ€™s like a damn weed! A dangerous weed strangling and killing everything around it.ย  You know if you just cut the top off so you canโ€™t see what is beneath, itโ€™s still there below the surface! Everyone knows, if you want to get rid of weeds, you have to pull them up from the root! Otherwise, it just continues to grow, no matter how hard you try to kill it.ย  YOU HAVE TO ADDRESS THE ROOTS! And we know whatโ€™s at the root of racism. FEAR.ย  But now we know.ย  Well, we always knew it existed, but to this level?ย  I certainly didnโ€™t.

We need to have some open and honest conversations and conversations donโ€™t just mean talking.  For it to be a conversation, we also have to listen.  Listen.  Read. Learn.  We all must exercise compassion.  Attempt to understand others.  From compassion emerges kindness.  Kindness creates good will, helping to dispel hatred promoting peace love and understanding.  (I know, that was very Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gayish sounding!)

We all have to recover from this year individually and as a country and itโ€™s going to take a minute. Even after we have a new President, itโ€™s going to be a battle.  There is much work to be done. We have to talk this mess out.  And thatโ€™s no easy thing to do when you have people that are not willing to listen.  Donโ€™t be one of them. It just wonโ€™t be easy!

Some folks have to rebuild their entire lives.  But Iโ€™m happy to report, Iโ€™m hopeful.  Iโ€™m optimistic.  Things will get better. It might not be today, but I believe.

In the meantime, and in between time, (TODAY) we have to work on relieving stress and anger so that we can continue to wake up and stay in the fight! Because unchecked, both will kill you! And we want you to stick around.  I want to stick around.  I got S@*T to do!

So, if you have been as stressed out or as angry as I have, here are some suggestions to try this week:

Take a walk.  Get some exercise and weather permitting, some sun light and fresh air!

Breathe deeply! Iโ€™m talking deep abdominal breathing few of us do.  Deep breathing not only calms stress, it helps eliminate toxins from your body.  What isnโ€™t purged in the bathroom, is purged through your respiratory system!

Do some yoga.  Meditate. Sit and do absolutely nothing!!!!!! Quiet your mind. It’s not easy, but try!

Herbs can be an effective option in helping to minimize the effects of stress.   Just make sure to do your homework and when you are taking other medications or have health issues.  Check out, Valerian Root which can be highly sedative, but there are a list of drugs it can interact with so check with your doctor! Lemon Balm.  (You can chew the leaves.  Make a tea or add to a salad) It should help with nervousness and insomnia.  Kava Kava Root is another anti-anxiety herb, but avoid this one if you have liver issues.  Again check with the Doc and/or do your research.

Read a good book and sip on a warm cup of calming Chamomile tea.

Watch an inspiring documentary.

Turn on some soothing music and relax or blast some dance music and shake your ass!

Take a candle-lit bath! If you have a diffuser, throw some calming essential oils in there.  Try the โ€œCalmโ€ blend from Vibrant Blue Oils or try Frankincense for a calm, relaxing and meditative feeling.  Vetiver is known for itโ€™s calming effects as well. Chamomile mixed with a little Lavender and Geranium oils is also calming.

Recently, I noticed that it was taking far fewer hair- pins to pin curl my hair at night.  I have to admit, I was more than a little concerned when I noticed.  Not only that, the ponytail I would be sporting by day three after the salon, was feeling a little light.  I asked my hairstylist a/k/a daughter, if she felt that I was losing some hair.  It wasnโ€™t my imagination.  She said, โ€œWellโ€ฆ.โ€ and I knew what followed wasnโ€™t good news.  โ€œYou definitely donโ€™t have as much hair as you did two or three years ago.  My initial thoughts were, well that coincides with being on BP meds.  Maybe the meds were causing my hair to thin out.  She said, โ€œWell, I do know that I have clients whose hair thinned out after they started taking blood pressure meds, so that could be the reason!โ€

Of course, I dug deeper and thought long and hard about it.  It might not be the meds!  Maybe there is a deeper issue at play.  Perhaps itโ€™s the fact that menopause is the reason that so many women my age end up on blood pressure meds. Before menopause, I had perfectly normal BP.  Of course, I didnโ€™t have the level of stress or the crazy lifestyle that is the past three years, but Iโ€™m guessing that menopause is partly to blame for the blood pressure issues and completely to blame for the thinning hair.  So, you know me.  Research followed!  Here is what I learned.

Hair loss may be caused by many factors: stress, nutritional deficiency, underlying medical conditions, prolonged sleep loss, hormonal disturbances, extremely dry weather, chemical buildup on the scalp, harsh hair care products, wrong hairstyle, (yes, that too) clogged follicles, or a combination of two or more of these factors.

While gradual hair loss is naturally a part of biological aging, excessive shedding around menopause should not be taken lightly. According to the data collected by the North American Hair Research Society, about 50% of women in their 50s face excessive hair loss problems. As a matter of fact, our age starts affecting the density and overall appearance of our hair as we enter our 40s. But this change is so gradual that it is typically not a cause of concern.

However, menopause and seasonal changes can accelerate the process so much that it might become a significant source of discomfort and anxiety. More importantly, unnaturally thinning hair might be an indication that there is something seriously wrong with your diet or lifestyle. In any case, excessive hair fall at any time of your life deserves your attention.

Aging does affect your hair and scalp.  Iโ€™m not alone in my wider-part-thinning-ponytail world! Hair follicles slow down and eventually shut down due to declining cellular and hormonal functioning. BUT, the good news is that you can revive your cells and the hormonal functioning making it possible to regrow hair.

In Roxy Dillonโ€™s book, Bio Young, she explains, โ€œHormonal and cellular decline produce distressing scalp hair thinning loss and unwanted hair growth. Thankfully, there are many natural cellular and hormonal stimulators that can reverse hair loss on the scalp and stop the growth of unwanted hair.โ€ (You know that Aunt Bunnie stache you didnโ€™t see because you needed glasses.  You went to get your brows done and were shocked to be asked, โ€œYou want mustache waxed too?โ€)

In her book, she further explains that declining estrogen in women is a huge factor in our hair loss and thinning.  And just as our estrogen levels fall during menopause, a male hormone DHT (which has a long ass technical scientific name) the same hormone that affects menโ€™s hairlines becomes dominant. โ€œWhen DHT levels rise, scalp hair follicles shrivel up and become inactive.โ€

BUT, Dillon also points out that rebalancing estrogen in a womanโ€™s body can result in hair regrowth.

You need a combination of cellular stimulation along with hormonal balancing in order to restore things on your crown!

But wait.  Thereโ€™s more good news.  It seems it may even be possible to reverse graying hair. Hair color loss is due to a decreasing number of melanocytes cells responsible for hair color.

But wait! I have some more good news! There are some highly esteemed herbs, oils and natural treatments that have been proven to help regrow hair and reverse hair graying.

For centuries women in India have used sesame oil and coconut oil for restoring gray hair. The herbal supplement Ashwagandha, is yet another Ayurvedic herb said to restore melanin. (Lack of is responsible for your silver mane.)

Even if youโ€™re okay with that silver fox look, surely itโ€™s good to know that there are still things that you can do to prevent and reverse thinning.

Here are a few other natural options commonly used in the East.

Amla

Amla, also known as Indian gooseberry, is their top pick for promoting hair regrowth. Amla is truly a superfood for hair that provides everything your hair needs to stay healthy and shiny. It has been scientifically proven to check hair fall, improve scalp health, thicken hair strands, repair split ends, promote hair growth, strengthen the roots and reverse graying.

Amla is one of the richest sources of vitamin C on earth โ€“ it contains about 20 times more vitamin C than the much-hyped orange! Vitamin C, used by the body to make keratin can work wonders for your hair.  In addition, vitamin C naturally boosts collagen production (another important protein that is a part of the hair structure), removes scalp buildup, and helps keep the hair follicles clean.

Vitamin C is also a great antioxidant helping to repair the color pigment melanin at the roots, thus reversing discoloration or premature graying.

Secondly, Amla is also a rich source of iron โ€“ another ingredient that your hair needs to shine. The Vitamin C can also help increase your iron absorption โ€“ great for pre menopausal menstruating women when they are at a higher risk of anemia due to heavy blood loss.

Vitamin C and iron are both essential nutrients for aging hair. A deficiency of can cause severe hair loss and discoloration.

In additional Amla is a powerhouse of strong antioxidants like polyphenols and flavonoids that protect the hair from free radical damage and improve the elasticity of strands, making them more resistant to breakage.

And finally Amla is a great immunity booster, a potent adaptogen, and an anti-aging herb that detoxifies and rejuvenates EVERY cell of your body.  Its ability to balance hormones and reduce stress indirectly helps in checking hair fall.  (Stress is one of the most common factors for excessive hair loss which could also be a factor in my case!)

There are many ways to use Amla โ€“ you can add the fruit to your diet (which is very bitter, but nutritious), drink Amla juice, apply the juice directly to your hair, use the powder form in your homemade hair packs, or massage your scalp with Amla oil. I suggest you massage your scalp regularly with Amla oil,(Easier to do when you are natural or not visiting a salon!)

Castor oil

Castor oil is unarguably one of the most potent oils for promoting hair health, second only to coconut oil. Castor oil is incredibly rich in essential fatty acids that provide complete nourishment to the scalp and hair.  Regular scalp massage with castor oil is an age-old remedy to check thinning hair and naturally stimulate hair growth. It also contains antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties that can help with some scalp conditions that might be causing hair breakage. Castor oil has a very viscous, honey-like consistency.  You can mix it with coconut oil in a 1:2 ratio (one-part castor, two-part coconut), and give yourself a scalp massage regularly.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is said to be a good scalp and follicle stimulator, also capable of strengthening  and thickening hair. Apple cider vinegar can be added to shampoo or used as a rinse. You can add equal parts of Apple cider vinegar and shampoo, or simple apply apple cider vinegar to your scalp 30 minutes before you wash.  Another option, is to  make an herbal rinse using a few handfuls of fresh organic herbs such as rosemary, basil, parsley, or mint, all of which have been shown to benefit hair, along with two cups of apple cider vinegar and a few drops of essential oils.   (Might I suggest, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, or mint?)

Coffee

Although coffee or caffeine has less anti-DHT activity, it can still help to awaken hair follicles on the scalp that have become dormant. Apply strong coffee to your scalp several minutes before washing.  According to Dillon, even a strong instant cup of coffee will suffice.

Dillonโ€™s book also refers to a study investigating the effects of caffeine on hair follicles.  According to the study, caffeine can help with the negative affects of DHT.

Pumpkin seed oil, which can be used in salad dressings are smoothies has also been shown to lower DHT and can be effective for hair regrowth.

Onion

Onion juice or onion powder can stimulate follicles to regrow hair. Onions are a rich source of sulfur that is essential for the formation of Keratin.  (Keratin: structural protein material with protective functions that helps to form the tissues of hair, skin and nails)

You can add onion powder to shampoo or blend and strain the juice from fresh organic onions.

Quertecin,  (A pigment that belongs to a group of plant compounds called flavonoids linked to many health benefits including reduced risk of heart disease, cancer and degenerative brain disorders) found in onions, can also increase the production of melanin in the hair, restoring color.

Studyโ€™s have shown that Quertecinโ€™s powerful estrogenic activity is beneficial to not only hair, but your skin and bones.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28620474

โ€œThe Journal of Dermatology published a study that found that onion juice overwhelmingly supports hair growth. After applying onion juice to the scalp twice a day for six weeks, 20 out of 23 participants saw positive results and reported that onion juice is a natural hair loss treatment that actually works. Onions have long been loved as a natural hair loss treatment because their sulfur content helps increase blood circulation, they promote collagen growth, and they contain antibacterial properties that treat scalp infections. To use, work onion juice into your scalp and let sit for 15 minutes. Then rinse using your regular shampoo.โ€

Maca a root vegetable with anti-aging powers can stimulate hair growth and also help to form a protective coating around the hair shaft. (You can find this in pretty much any health food store or Wholefoods.)

Lard stimulates hair growth as a cheap amazing treatment. (Also so in Wholefoods and many grocery stores.)

 Essential Oils

There are also some essential oils that can stimulate your scalp and hair follicles.

Ylang Ylang  and Lavender oil has been shown to be highly effective in stimulating hair growth. Head massages manually stimulate hair follicles. Rosemary and Eucalyptus oil can be effective used separately or together. According to Dillon you should apply the oil every day to your scalp for six months. (Skipping a day here and they is optional.) For best results use rosemary and eucalyptus oils combined. Try Rosemary and eucalyptus oilโ€˜s in equal parts. Use along with a base of olive oil or lard for scalp massages.

Fennel and Aniseed are estrogenic herbs that can stimulate hair follicles. Massage you scalp regularly with these essential oils. Your follicles are manually stimulated.

โ€œA scalp massage can increase blood flow to the scalp and to the hair follicles,โ€ explains Debra Jaliman, MD, a dermatologist in private practice on Manhattanโ€™s Upper East Side and author of Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist.

A study in the January 2016 issue of ePlasty shows that as little as four minutes of scalp massage daily increases activity among genes known to promote hair growth, At the same time, slows activity of genes linked to hair loss and inflammation. Study participants also noted an improvement in thickness of their hair. โ€œGentle massaging of the scalp can increase blood flow to the hair follicle, the root of the hair, which is the only living part of the hair,โ€ says Abraham Armani, MD, medical director of Armani Medical Hair Restoration in Dallas. โ€œMassaging works by dilating the very small arteries within the scalp, increasing blood flow to the hair follicle and therefore prolonging the growth cycle of hair.โ€

And finally, I must include the importance of diet in pretty much EVERYTHING!  Your hair, like the rest of you, needs the right foods and nutrients.

Nutritional deficiency, especially iron deficiency, can worsen age-related hair loss. Consume foods that are rich in protein, iron, Omega 3, and Vitamins C and E. Folic Acid, Magnesium, Selenium, Zinc, and Vitamins A and D are some of the other nutrients that can help improve hair health.  Load up on antioxidants to naturally protect your hair from free radical damage that comes from sun and age.  Wild caught salmon, lemon, eggs, avocados, walnuts, licorice root and, nettle leaf teas or tinctures should be some of your go-to foods for hair.

If we take good care of our bodies on the inside, our good health will be reflected on the outside!

Iโ€™m pretty sure that I was in my forties before I went through a bottle of foundation.  My make up routine was lipgloss and eye liner.  I wore make up for special occasions.  I used to have to throw it away because it dried up.  And concealer?  What the hell was that?  I used to watch my girl, magically transform when we traveled together.  She needed a whole extra thirty minutes to get ready to go out, but she would look amazing. Think she called it, “A beat, or beat up, beat down!” Don’t start me to lying.  I didnโ€™t need thirty because I’m not that skilled or experienced, but a good fifteen eventually became twenty-thirty on an average day! My how things have changed.  And as it turns out, it might very well be time for things to change again!

Contrary to what you might think based on the title, this post is definitely not just about faces, but thatโ€™s where Iโ€™m starting.  Awareness about the dangers of toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis has definitely been increasing. Iโ€™ve written a few posts about toxins and the necessity for detoxing. Many of us are finally becoming aware and concerned about what goes into our bodies and into our bloodstream.

For us women in particular, research has revealed that chemicals in our numerous skincare products can have some seriously adverse effects on hormonal balance.  (As if periomenopause and menopause wasnโ€™t enough!) I imagine this applies to men as well, although they probably use far fewer products than us ladies!

These chemicals enter our bloodstream through the skin.  Remember, your skin is an organ and these chemicals are designed to penetrate your skin.  AND, not only can they make you sick, they can disrupt your life in many ways including affecting your sleep, mood, and ability to focus.

Think of it like this, and I know it sounds totally crazy, but your skin eats and drinks too.  (Whatever you put on it!)  So, what are you feeding it?  Chemical laden dyes, lotions, nail polish, make up?  Dr. Kathyrn M Rexrode, Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School points out that products are mostly tested for short-term issues like skin irritation, not long-term safety.

We go through great lengths these days to clean up our diet, but what we feed our skin matters too!

I highly recommend you check out the 2019 documentary Toxic Beauty directed by Phyllis Ellis. The film condenses a three-year investigation of unregulated chemicals in personal care products.  The filmโ€™s opening scenes start with the story of Rosemarie Swift, a beauty industry icon whose work as a make up artist has been featured in Vogue, Harpers, and in ads for Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton and the list goes on and on.  She is the founder of RMS Beauty.  She speaks about falling ill and suffering from panic attacks, immune issues, memory loss, hormonal imbalances and rashes.

โ€œThe lab tech found high levels of numerous chemicals, and asked Rose-Marie if she worked in the cosmetic industry, which freaked her out; he said he saw a lot of people come to the lab with similar problems, all of whom did hair and makeup. So Rose-Marie detoxed her life.โ€

The chemicals in her hair blood and urine connected those dots. She launched beautytruth.com in 2004 to expose the industries ugliest ingredients. She went on to create the first truly organic cosmetic line which is now sold worldwide.

https://www.rmsbeauty.com

And unless youโ€™ve been living under a rock, Iโ€™m sure you have heard about the huge lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson by about 15,000 women with cancer.  Apparently a lifetime use of Talcum powder was linked to ovarian cancer.  If you had kids back in the day, surely you remember putting  J&J powder in your baby’s diaper! In 2019 the FDA detected evidence of asbestos in a product sample which was recalled, however they have still paid out billions in damages to plaintiffs.

Have you noticed the โ€œParaben Freeโ€ description on your shampoos and conditioners now? I canโ€™t say I knew exactly what they were before I started researching clean living. I just knew when I started seeing Paraben-Free on packaging, whatever they were, they must be bad news.  So, in case you are like me and donโ€™t know what they are, they are preservatives used in a lot of skincare and haircare products to extend the shelf-life.   (Not much different from food, huh?) Unfortunately, they act like estrogen and can mimic hormones, leading to hormonal imbalances and potentially hormone related cancers.  (Like Breast Cancer!)  Piling on products such as soaps, lotions, make-up like foundations, concealers and lipsticks can mean piling on harmful chemicals! (And for me, half that lipstick ends up in my mouth due to a lack of lips, so basically you can say I just eat it!)

Now for women of color, it gets worse!

โ€œBlack women have more uterine fibroids and more aggressive types of breast cancer. Anything that mimics estrogen should be avoided by women with these tumors.โ€

But wait.  It gets even worse. More bad news from that article included the fact that 75% of products marketed directly to black women have ingredients that are toxic AND that โ€œweโ€ spend twice as much on skincare products as the general population. (I found that one hard to believe!) Research from *EWG (Environmental Working Group) shows that one in twelve beauty products marketed to black women contains toxic substances.

*EWG is a non profit and has a database with safety ratings for ingredients.

And while Iโ€™m talking to my sisters, letโ€™s talk about relaxers.  Hair straightening treatments apparently have high levels of carcinogens and toxins. A new study links the use a permanent hair dye and chemical straightenerโ€™s with a 60% increase in breast cancer risk for black women. โ€œHair straightenersโ€ and relaxers are formulated with estrogen and placental hormones that can contribute to changes in the reproductive system says,โ€ Kyla Taylor a health scientist at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

And, us older women have had more exposure since we have probably used these products for years. Think of all the lotions, PERMS, soaps, body wash, shampoo and conditioners youโ€™ve used over the years. (And remember when there was just soap!  Not body wash in plastic containers! Soap was wrapped in paper!) And if Jheri Curl juice was toxic, we are all screwed! But seriously, when exactly did we become too good for a bar of soap?  I travel with a bar of soap now.  One less liquid to squeeze into that zip lock bag!  AND one less plastic container to pollute the earth!

My first thought after my daughters diagnosis was wondering whether or not her MS was related to exposure to chemicals.  After all, sheโ€™s been exposed to chemicals for 22-23 years now! Another study published online December 3, 2019 by the International Journal of Cancer found a link between hair dye and breast cancer. The study also found breaking down the findings by race, an even higher risk for African-American women existed.

I swear, it seems we women have to choose between our health and trying to meet some standard of beauty. Tamarra James โ€“ Todd, Ph.D, Assistant Professor of Reproductive and Perinatal Epidemiology at Harvard stated similar findings for hair dye. โ€œSome hair care products contain more than 5000 chemicals including some known to disrupt the bodyโ€˜s natural hormone balance or to have cancer causing effects in animals. I quickly realized, while my daughter may be the one applying the color, Iโ€™m the one whose scalp is eating up that dye! Bad for us both!

โ€œIt may not be easy to let your hair go gray and to embrace your wrinkles, but itโ€™s a cultural shift women should consider. Being healthy is beautiful and women should challenge the cultural standard of beauty. Itโ€™s about being comfortable with those changes and changing whatโ€™s acceptable,โ€ says James- Todd.

Iโ€™m trying Tamarra!  Iโ€™m trying!

Remember the Brazilian blowout company? I remember it was all the rage for a while in salons. Well, in 2011 FDA warned them that their hair straightening products contain dangerously high levels of the carcinogen formaldehyde. Meanwhile the label said the product was free of it!  Lies!  Just lies!

Although brands are also coming up with a range of natural skin and hair care products claiming to be โ€œNaturalโ€ and โ€œParaben-Free, they often contain some other type of chemical(s).  All is not lost. There really are some genuine options out there. It is important to note that with readymade products, there are bound to be some chemicals. Most moisturizers contain water and need some emulsifier to bind oils. Some preservatives are also necessary to sustain some shelf life.

Olive Oil for Hair and Skin!

Now for some good news! There are literally a thousand natural ingredients to rejuvenate your skin โ€“ luxurious nut-butters, vegetable oils, essential oils, beeswax, fruits, nuts, spices, and herbs.  Yes! Kitchen ingredients โ€“everyone will find something especially suited for their particular skin type.

So, feeling ambitious?  Reduce your toxic burden by making some of your own skincare products. Craft your own creams, lotions, balms, lipsticks, face packs, hair packs, perfumes, hair styling gels, and other skincare products using natural oils and fruit-butters.  I personally use coconut oil all over! But some skin types might not fare as well in terms of the face.  Another all natural product I was gifted and love is K.Buggagesโ€™ Sweet Jamaica Cocoa Butter. (see below!)  It is organic and smells amazing.  I have the driest hands known to man.  Even before Covid (OD on Hand Sanitizer) with cooking, I was constantly washing my hands or had them in water.  Love what it does for my hands and elbows!

DIY skincare products are not only a safer option, but they offer plenty of long-term benefits that truly most brands canโ€™t compete with. To begin with, you know what is in it! You can make highly personalized products instead of those one size fits all productions.

Most brands classify their creams and lotions as oily, normal, and dry skin types, which doesnโ€™t always work. Requirements of our skin vary with seasons, hormonal changes, diet, water intake, stress, physical exercise, and many other factors. Moreover, many people do not fit into any of these criteria, but fall somewhere in between.

Making DIY creams and lotions using natural ingredients can also provide better nourishment for your skin. Natural oils are full of essential fats and vitamins that help replenish the skin of lost moisture and protect against environmental aging. Their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties can keep acne problems at bay (adult acne is a big issue) and help minimize large pores. Nut-butters like shea butter, mango butter, cocoa butter, kokum butter, and oils like argan and rosehip are the most effective anti-aging creams you will ever find! Also, the best thing about DIY products is โ€“ you can always change them. If you think something is missing โ€“you can always modify it.

The downside of DIY skincare: since you are not using preservative, these products will have a shorter shelf life. Try making small batches and putting in a little of vitamin E (a natural preservative), or by storing your creams in the refrigerator. In an ideal situation, if you are not using water, your creams should stay good for at least 8-10 weeks at room temperature. However, be sure to take the utmost care when preparing your creams, such as avoiding moisture, clean hands, and sanitizing your utensils and containers.

If you are interested, here are some DIY recipes to try. It is important to remember that everyoneโ€™s skin is different, and these recipes are only suggestive โ€“ to offer a starting point. Try combining different ingredients and feel free to experiment with other oils too.

My Black is Not Cracking – Body Butter

This can work as your everywhere butter โ€“ night cream, body lotion, hand cream, foot cream, face moisturizer, undereye cream, a lotion for lightening the underarm skin, a nail cream to protect your cuticles, hair moisturizer, a leave-on-conditioner, or as a lip balm.

Ingredients:

Shea butter: 1 ยฝ tablespoon

Cocoa butter: ยฝ tablespoon

Coconut oil: ยผ teaspoon

Argan oil: ยฝ teaspoon

Jojoba oil: ยฝ teaspoon

Vitamin E oil: ยผ teaspoon

Tea tree oil: 5 drops

Frankincense oil: 4 drops

Lavender oil: 4 drops

Note: Ingredients for this body butter can be as versatile as you like. You can replace cocoa butter with mango butter or add other kinds of butter or oils. Essential oils are optional and can also be replaced by other oils, depending on your preference and liking. However, keep the butter/oil ratio to a similar proportion for a creamy consistency.

Method of preparation:

Using the double boiler method, melt the butter and oils together. Be sure to keep the temperature on the lowest for this because high temperatures can negate many therapeutic properties of oils. Rapid melting is also not recommended for butters.

Add vitamin E oil, essential oils, and mix well. Pour the liquid in a clean glass jar.

Put the jar in the refrigerator. Rapid cooling is very important because letting the mixture cool at room temperature can result in a grainy butter.

Store the cream at room temperature. If you find it too greasy, melt again and add more butters.

My Black is Not Cracking – Anti-Aging / Anti-Crack Cream

This cream works best at night. You can also use it as a daily face moisturizer, hand cream, or as a scar healer.

Argan oil: 1 teaspoon

Rosehip oil: ยผ teaspoon

Almond oil: ยผ teaspoon

Rose essential oil: 5 drops

Carrot seed essential oil: 5 drops

Sandalwood oil: 2 drops

Method of preparation:

Honey Please

Did you know that honey not only draws in moisture, (humectant) but contains alpha-hydroxy acid which helps to even out skin tone.  Raw honey also helps balance the bacteria on your skin, which makes it great for acne.  I am fortunate that I no longer deal with very many skin breakouts, but I do enjoy a manuka honey mask (and in my tea).  Manuka was been found to be very effective in speeding up your skin cellsโ€™ healing.  Honey also has anti-aging benefits for those of us who are trying to prevent our black (or any other color skin) from cracking!  I buy raw, unfiflterd honey, but I have also splurged on Manuka which costs a bit (Okay, a lot) more.

Try using it as a cleaner.  Wet your face with warm water.  Massage some honey all over your face as you would any other cleanser.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24305429

This study cites that the use of honey retards wrinkle formation.

A 2017 study on the honey of the stingless bee found that the raw honey has a strong anti-inflammatory effect. Another review of studies supports this, finding that most honey varieties have anti-inflammatory properties.

It is important to do a patch test first. A person should apply a small amount of honey to a tiny area of the skin and wait for at least 20-30 minutes. If the skin becomes irritated, do not use! When using honey on your skin you can also mix it with other ingredients.

Studies show that raw honey contains pollen and bee propolis. According to a 2015 review, bee pollen contains a few helpful properties. It can have a pain-relieving, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects. However, it is important to note that pasteurization removes both pollen and propolis from the honey.which may reduce its antioxidant effects. In addition, processed honey may contain additives and sweeteners.

ANYONE allergic to honey should not use honey on their skin. People with allergies to pollen or bees should also avoid applying honey topically.  For people without known allergies, it is still important to test a small part of the skin before applying honey to larger areas of the body.

Finally, since it is highly unlikely that we will all start making our own products, the moral of the story is stay informed.  We are all going to use products and wear some make up even if only for special occasions.  I have definitely started giving my skin a break. I have been pleasantly surprised to see that there seems to be a move toward more natural and fresh faces.  It was refreshing during this Covid crisis to see bare faced women show their true selves!  If youโ€™re not quite there yet, do this.  Take an inventory and check your ingredients.  Less is more and just because it says natural and botanical, doesnโ€™t mean it is!  Do your homework.  And donโ€™t forget to check out EWG which is a non profit and has a database with safety ratings for ingredients.   Another suggestion is to consider European manufacturers that ban many ingredients allowed in the US products. I read in one of the gazillion articles I used as research that as many as 1000-1300 ingredients are banned in Europe compared to about a dozen banned in the US!  Insert big-eyed emoji, and maybe the praying hands and then maybe that red face that looks pissed!  If the Government isnโ€™t going to look out for us (definitely not this administration!) we will have to look out for ourselves.

It is so strange.ย  It never fails.ย  Within a week of publishing a post on a topic, I walk into a bookstore, or cruise a magazine rack on my way to the coffee counter in Barnes & Noble (Where there is never a line and you can get that same highly acidic, eat the paint off your car, coffee!) and there are always one or two publications with articles on those very subjects.ย  Obviously, I am not the only person thinking about these topics.ย  (Not that I thought I was!) It just never fails.ย  Based on the fact that these articles are being published for the masses, these topics are on a lot of folksโ€™ minds.

Before I wrote the post on habits last week, I had reached out to my friend Barb who has written guest posts for MBIC in the past, and asked her to contribute to the topic of habits.ย  As a psychologist, I thought we could all use some insight from a professional.ย  Youโ€™re welcome.

I read a few of the articles this past week and there was quite a bit of useful information in them as well.ย โ€œAbout 43% of our daily behaviors are controlled by habit,โ€ says Wendy Wood PhD, Professor of Psychology and Business at UCLA, and author of โ€œGood Habits, Bad Habits, The Science of Making Positive Changes That Stick. Itโ€™s funny we donโ€™t pay much attention to our good habits, but if youโ€™re like me, youโ€™re quick to beat yourself up over the bad ones.

I learned, according to Charles Duhigg, author of โ€œThe Power of Habit,โ€ย  The simple act and habit of making your bed is correlated with better productivity, a greater sense of well-being and stronger money management skills? Crazy right? I cannot leave my house without making my bed.ย  I struggle not to completely make up hotel beds!ย  I have literally been late because I must make my bed.ย  You don’t really think about habits that much. You just have a bunch of them!

Duhigg states that, โ€œmost of our habits are good habits that are working for us.โ€ ย But those bad ones! Look, change is possible, but just donโ€™t expect it to happen overnight. The good news is that positive habits, according Duhigg, โ€œArenโ€™t just useful on their own they can foster other good-for-you traits as well.โ€ Dr. Wood states, โ€œPeople think they can decide to break a bad habit or form a good one, but habits donโ€™t respond to our decisions. Instead habits form as we repeat actions over time incrementally, slowly, and through repetition. So I asked Barb for her thoughts on habits and changing habits that do not serve us.ย  Below, is what Barb offered up!ย  Enjoy!

CHANGE IS GRADUAL, RELAPSE IS PART OF THE PROCESS”

Guest Contributor: Barb Fotschย  LCSW

Getting older doesn’t mean there is no desire to improve ourselves or build new habits……Frankly, change has always been hard; sometimes it results in a bit of self blaming when progress is so dang slow.

The model often used in the counseling field, which has become very popular in the last decade, is from Prochaska and DeClemente’s stages. I have found it helpful in keeping people more hopeful and optimistic because the premise is, “Change is gradual and relapse is simply part of the process”.  In a nutshell, here is the framework.

Pre-contemplation:  Reluctant, rebellious, resigned, rationalizing…this stage is pre-awareness. We barely, if ever, are thinking about changing.

Contemplation:  Fence sitting, closer to making some change, still a bit ambivalent such as “I might change” in the future.

Preparation: More determined and more likely to test the waters in next 30 days.

Action: Some change has occurred within last 5-6 months; intend to move forward with new behaviors. Begin to develop relapse prevention strategies.

Maintenance: Maintained changes for a while, more than 6 months; have new skills for maintaining.

Relapse; A setback – returned to old ways, evaluates and reconfirms commitment to change.

Termination: I am changed forever  (LOL don’t think so)

There is a lot of good reading on this topic and the bottom line is:

WE CAN DO IT!

I would love to hear from you! What new positive habits have you successfully incorporated into your life?

If you are like me, you have more than a few bad habits. Thereโ€™s probably a list.

Definition: Hab-it

A settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.  Acquired mode of behavior that has become nearly or completely involuntary.

James Clear writes โ€œYour life is the sum of your habits.โ€  Lately, I have been taking a lot of classes related to health and nutrition.  Iโ€™m doing this in an effort to help some of the people close to me that are experiencing health issues, but also to arm myself with as much knowledge as possible so that I can avoid being one of those people!

I think, if you have read my previous posts, you know that I am a big believer that most of our health issues are almost 100% related to our diet and lifestyle choices.  When I think of diet, I think of how much of what we consume is based on our habits.  Whether or not we exercise is based on habits, or lack thereof.  Our thoughts, as well as our mental health, can also be a result of habits.  Negative thinking, which Iโ€™ve experienced my fair share of lately, is also a habit.  If your first response to everything that happens to you is negative, that is a habit. (And not a very good one!)

We have all had habits, good or bad, for most of our lives!  Exercise for me, is a habit.  For others, not so much.  Beating myself up when I do not exercise is also a habit.

Of course, you know me.  I started researching the science behind breaking bad habits and establishing new better habits. (And not waiting until New Year’s Eve)  My research led me to the understanding that:

Your physical condition is likely a result of  – good/bad habits.

Your happiness or unhappiness is likely a result of  – good/bad habits.

Youโ€™re being successful or unsuccessful is likely a result of  – good/bad habits.

Many, if not all habits involve the brainโ€™s dopamine system.  That is the โ€œfeel goodโ€ chemical that gives us that euphoric feeling.  (Very temporary feeling, I might add. Often not worth the guilty pleasure.)

James Clear writes, โ€œWhat you do repeatedly and think about forms who you are, things you believe and the personality you portray.โ€  Your life is largely a result of your habits.

So, what are habits and how can you establish new ones and break up with some old ones that are not serving you?

According to my research from multiple sites and articles, building a habit is broken down into a few steps.  Each article presented it in a slightly different fashion, but the message was the same.

Cue โ€“ The trigger.  The cue predicts the reward whether it be money, fame, status, love, satisfaction or approval.  Knowing what your triggers are can help you avoid them!

Craving โ€“ This is the motivational force.  The craving is not the habit.  The craving is for the change in your state that is delivered as a result of the reward.  You crave chocolate not for the sake of chocolate, but for the feeling of satisfaction is provides.  You crave entertainment, so you turn on music or the TV.

Response โ€“ This is the actual habit.  This can be an action or just a thought.

Reward โ€“ This is the end goal.  The satisfaction and relief from a craving.  Iโ€™m craving a chocolate chip cookie because I want the satisfaction that I will experience as that buttery, gooey cookie and those semi-sweet chocolate morsels melt in my mouth! That cookie delivers some momentarily contentment.  That feeling of euphoria!

While in quarantine, Tates Chocolate Cookies became a habit for me.  Iโ€™m so glad Trader Joes doesnโ€™t carry them, but dammit, Wholefoods likes to put them on sale regularly!  Maybe it was the isolation.  Maybe it was the stress of worrying about my family and Covid, or finances, (also related to Covid!) or whether or not I would have a job and how quickly I would become homeless trying to live off that unemployment!  Whatever the reason, I was craving those cookies!  (Even though, my brain knew it was bad for me. But so Good. Like a tollhouse without the mess or the dishes!!!! I know, that isnโ€™t helping anyone, but itโ€™s true!)

I started thinking about some other habits that do not serve me and about how to go about breaking free of them!  After not giving habits much thought, suddenly I had a list!

I read in multiple articles that a good way to break a bad habit is to replace it with a good one!  Can I retrain my brain to crave kale chips instead?   Elliot Berkman, Director of the University of Oregonโ€™s Neuroscience Lab writes, โ€œInstead of trying to stop doing something, start doing something else.  Forming a new habit takes time and commitment.โ€

https://time.com/5373528/break-bad-habit-science

Phillipa Lally psychology researcher at University College London in a study published in the European journal of Social Psychology concluded that on average it takes two about months before a new behavior becomes automatic.  Of course, we are all different, so the results varied.  However, you will never really know how many days it takes for you to establish a new positive habit unless there is a day one. Just start!

Establishing good habits often means illuminating the bad habits. Some habits are deeply wired into our brains due to constant repetition. If itโ€™s something that brings you pleasure, like those damn Tates cookies, itโ€™s even more challenging.

Not naming names, but a family member who shall remain nameless, repeatedly blames her โ€œInner Child,โ€ for her bad dietary habits.  I joke and say, โ€œYour inner child is old as S*#T now and should know that those habits are not serving you!โ€ But the fact is that many of our negative habits for whatever reason, make us feel better.  I donโ€™t think anyone escapes childhood without wounds, and for some their wounds are more damaging than others!  Those wounds can obviously become the trigger.  Wanting to feel better is the reward, BUT can we train our brains to crave better things?  Can we develop the habit that when we feel emotional pain, to deal with it in a more positive manner than a pint of Haagen Daaz?  Can we train our brains to crave leafy greens instead? (Yes, I know from my culinary studies itโ€™s the fat that provides the satiety, so I know Iโ€™m reaching here!) Canโ€™t we train our brains to develop the habit of changing our thoughts before the downward spiral that leads us to the frozen foods ice cream aisle?

Many of us have excess weight to lose. We donโ€™t eat right.  We donโ€™t exercise! So, why donโ€™t we just do better?   I hear myself saying that to people just trying to encourage them to take better care of themselves. Mostly over the past few months it has been my daughter when she tells me she didnโ€™t get any exercise that day.  Diagnosed with MS, exercise and diet are EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, yet I hear myself fussing at her telling her to do better.  Her life depends on it.

In all honesty, ALL of our lives depend on it!  So why canโ€™t we ALL just, โ€œDO BETTER?โ€  I am trying to reduce my blood pressure.  I know that I have habits that do not serve me and keep me from achieving that goal.  There are a number of ways that I can also DO BETTER.  I too, have some habits to lose and some better ones in need of development.

I know that I need to learn how to relax more.  I need to develop relaxation habits.  I need to worry less.  I need to think more positive thoughts and deal with my fears.  I need to listen better and not cut people off. These are all HABITS that I need to break or develop. I need to DO BETTER!

The National Institute of Health funded scientists to research answers as to why we just canโ€™t โ€œDO BETTER! They found clues as to why bad habits, once we establish them, are so hard to break.

Dr. Nora Volkow Director of the National Institute of Health National Institute on Drug Abuse states, โ€œUnderstanding the biology of how we develop routines that may be harmful to us and how to break those routines and embrace new ones could help us change our lifestyles and adopt healthier behaviors. Habits arise from repetition. Habits are like auto pilot triggered by brain reward centers which can be potentially harmful routines such as eating too much, smoking and drinking too much.โ€ And I would add to that list social media and cell phones!

I was never on social media whatsoever until I started promoting my play and my blog. It truly is addictive! You read one article and the next thing you know an hour has passed and youโ€™ve accomplished nothing.  It was a complete waste of time. Well, except you laugh hysterically at something.  (I totally believe laughter is so necessary to good health.) It wasnโ€™t the pig that had two back wheels named Chris P. Bacon, it was the journalist trying to share the story of the pig while laughing hysterically that had me crying laughing! (I needed that laugh!)

At my age, (or any age) Iโ€™m not really interested in wasting time, so I need to break up with my new Instagram habit. I was told that in order to be successful with my blog I need to be active on social media. Iโ€™m sure that is one of the best ways to promote my work, but there still has to be a window of time dedicated to this. I was told I needed to comment and post. I need to get on and get off!  I need to develop a habit of checking twice a day or a set period of time.

I can certainly see how people become addicted and waste so much time scrolling through silly Memes and funny videos. But why? Why are we wasting and spending so much time on social media?  What is the reward?  Most people arenโ€™t promoting anything.  Theyโ€™re just spending time cruising other peopleโ€™s lives.  I guess you can say it has replaced magazines to some degree, but you see people post all day every little thing they do, every little thing they eat and every thought that they have. Do we not have anything better to do with our time? And why do we even care? Or our lives that empty and boring that we should spend our time on earth consumed with what someone else is doing all day? (Even if not all day. Wayyyyyyy too much time!)  I challenge people to just for one day clock the amount of time they waste on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram!   Just keep track for one day.  And then stop lying to yourself about not having time to do things you need or want to do.

Granted, sometimes there is something inspiring that it seems you needed to hear/read.  Sometimes there is useful news and that is the best way to get it instantly to the masses!  I just know I see a bunch of women posing half naked appearing desperate for attention and celebrities posing in front of cars and houses. (Why does it seem like all of a sudden everyone wants to be a supermodel? Maybe social media is a habit for them as well.) I mean, I saw a post earlier today by a celebrity because they got their eyebrows done. Geez. Read a book if you’re that bored.

Sorry for my Instagram rant and Iโ€™m not saying it is all bad.  Sometimes there is very useful information, inspiration and ideas when you need them.  But I would comfortably suggest that most have developed a habit that is not serving them and not the best use of their time.  Not judging.  Just an example of what for many, may be a bad habit.  You can decide for yourself on that one! It’s on my list!

Sadly, I feel like I donโ€™t have enough time to do things that I routinely did.  I have come to the conclusion it is a direct result of this new social media habit.  I probably waste an hour a day even if not all at one sitting. Just picking up the phone throughout the day looking at social media after responding to text messages. (Texts which are related to my job.) My job requires me to be on call and thereโ€™s a lot of communication through text messaging, so my phone is constantly in my hand, but I do not need to open Instagram.

All I know is that days are passing, and Iโ€™m dressed to work out and some days it doesnโ€™t happen because I donโ€™t have time. But I do have time! Iโ€™m just wasting it on a newly formed bad habit. I realized that I feel more rushed and stressed most days, but only since I started wasting precious time on stupid S*#T.

So thatโ€™s one habit I would like to break up with.  Trust me there is a list!

With regard to developing healthier lifestyle habits, “Change is always possible,โ€ says Dr. Linda Nebeling, an expert in behavioral change and nutrition at NIH. “Youโ€™re never too out-of-shape, too overweight or too old to make healthy changes. You can enlist friends and family to help you eat better, to go on walks with you, to remind you to stay on track,”

โ€œIt helps when youโ€™re connected to a group, where lifestyle change is a joint goal,โ€ says NIHโ€™s Dr. Sanford Garfield.

So, what are some ways to do this?  Here are a few I am trying:

USE THAT CALENDAR: Add it to the calendar on that phone you probably never put down! Or if you are like me and old school, write it down. Since my Daughter needs to walk, we now make walking dates.

PLAN AHEAD: I want to get BACK into having my warm lemon water in the AM because I know itโ€™s good for me and with my new job, I’ve fallen off the wagon a bit.  So, I need to slice the lemons the night before and have them ready.  Or I can use my water bottle that infuses and infuse my water the night before and just warm it in the AM. I also want to establish a celery juice habit.  So, perhaps to make this an easier habit to establish, I need to juice it at night.  That way, if I oversleep or Iโ€™m moving slowly for any reason, I can grab it and go! (As I understand, it doesnโ€™t really start losing its potency for 24 hours, so making it 10 hours before Iโ€™m going to consume it, is a good idea and makes it easier to stick with the habit.)

SET REMINDERS: If I know I want to work out a few mornings each week, I will lay out my work out clothes and my Nikes so they are the first thing I see.  I can use that phone to remind me to work out!  I can set alerts and use that phone for some positive habits instead of scrolling Instagram.

FIND AN IMPORTANT REASON: One way to improve your chances of successfully developing a new habit or breaking an old one is to have strong motivation.  For instance, the desire to live longer so that you can spend time with family and friends.  Or, just wanting to have a better quality of life. Think about how this new habit will enhance your life.  The desire to not want to be a burden to anyone is also a strong motivation to, โ€œDO BETTER!โ€ (Unless of course you are a selfish A-Hole in which case, find some selfish reason to do better.)

Lastly, I need to break the habit of beating myself up when I have a setback!   I need to be nicer to myself.  It takes time for new habits to kick in and older ones to die down.  One way I intend to do this is by setting small, realistic goals and working on a few at a time.  I also find that writing things down helps me to commit.

First and foremost, I need to make a habit of taking one day at a time!

What habits would you like to break up with?  What new habits would you like to establish?  I would love to hear from you about what steps you are taking or what methods you have used to break or establish new habits!
